2010 Provincial Exhibition

Upper Austrian Provincial Exhibition - Schloss Parz castle

Parz Castle in Grieskirchen with its splendid Renaissance-style fresco paintings serves as stunning backdrop for this exhibition that covers the formative period of European history from ca. 1300 to ca. 1700 with its radical changes on any aspect of thought and life, theology and culture.

The 2010 Provincial Exhibition of Upper Austria covers the formative period of European history from ca. 1300 to ca. 1700, which includes two pivotal movements: the Renaissance and the Reformation. Society, politics, economics, art and Christianity were all undergoing major transformations as the feudal, Church dominated society was being buried or reinvented. Individualism and humanism were coming to the fore as citizens started looking towards themselves for answers, rather than to God or Religious institutions. In Northern Europe these changes radically affected religious life. The Renaissance occurred simultaneously with the discovery of the New World and many scientific discoveries that seriously harmed the credibility of the Church and made many of her dogmas seem ridiculous. The Earth was no longer the center of the galaxy or flat and the Church was less and less the center of people’s lives. Protestantism encompasses the forms of Christian faith and practice that originated with the doctrines of the Reformation. Protestant doctrine, in contradistinction to that of Roman Catholicism, rejects papal authority and doctrine, and is also known in continental European traditions as Evangelical doctrine. The exhibition also documents the development of the Evangelical Church in Austria and in Upper Austria in particular.

The Renaissance opened the door to individual thinking. The Reformation was one of the results of this new emphasis. This exhibition will not only provide a mere display of precious cultural assets of this era; instead it is dedicated to provide visitors with various other alternative approaches to reform, change and continuity that happened in church and society from the fifteenth to seventeenth centuries.

Parz Castle in Grieskirchen, a true gem a true gem among Upper Austria's Renaissance castles, serves as stunning backdrop to the 2010 Provincial Exhibition of Upper Austria. The valuable fresco paintings on the south-west façade of Parz Castle were created under Sigmund von Pollheim and date back to the late 16th century. They are known as the only well-preserved outdoor frescoes in Renaissance style within the Alps. Depicting the Protestant belief of the lord of the castle, the valuable paintings were rediscovered and renovated in the late 1980ies.

Don’t miss out on visiting this year’s Upper Austrian Provincial Exhibition that will be running on Parz Castle from April 27 through November 07, 2010.
