TRIENNALE

TRIENNALE LINZ 1.0

2010 marks the kick-off of the TRIENNALE LINZ 1.0, an exhibition format that is to be newly established in Austria: a topical survey of art production in this country.

On the Wings of Linz09
On the Wings of Linz09
Linz continues with the impetus from the Capital of Culture year 2009 to present a compact selection of generations of artists significantly working in Austria today. Together, the Linz Provincial Gallery, the Linz LENTOS Art Museum, and the OK “Offenes Kulturhaus” Upper Austria show a representative cross-sectional time line through the current local art scene, positioning Linz as a center of Austrian contemporary art.

Following various particular highlights, each focusing on a certain artist scene in Austria, now a wide-scale exhibition project helps to gain an overview of and insights into contemporary local art production. Here it is not a question of constructing a concept of a nation, but rather of focusing on the art produced by an artist generation actively working in Austria with an international appeal.

A Glimpse into the Future of Art
Current trends and not yet manifest principle concepts of the contemporary local art scene are discovered and investigated for the exhibition. The focus is not on what is secure and certain, but on what has potential for the future. The curators are not interested in classical sediments, but instead, interesting experiments are at the heart of a show that is to become a fixed item in the art program every three years as the “TRIENNALE of Austrian Art”. It is to serve as a basis for discussions and to be regarded as a vantage point. A snapshot of positions expected to increase in significance.

The TRIENNALE makes no claim to comprehensively document Austrian contemporary art. Instead it seeks, based on roughly 100 positions, to illustrate certain tendencies. Starting from pointed curatorial theses, each of the three partner institutions has set out on a search, comparing results with one another, and conceiving three individually logical exhibitions.

Three Institutions – Three Exhibitions – One Art Event
The result is three exhibitions, each of which works by itself – but it is first in their totality that they can do justice to the pluralism of what is currently happening in art and give it a broad space. With the TRIENNALE LINZ 1.0, Linz offers the cultural event of summer 2010. The unfamiliar, hardly yet publicized, expanded with what is already renowned together with what has been specially developed for this show, this results in a fascinating spectrum. Accompanied by projects and performances in public space, LENTOS, OK and the Provincial Gallery artistically stir up the city of Linz in 2010.

Publication
A joint catalogue is published on the exhibition by the publishers Verlag Moderner Kunst Nürnberg with extensive documentation of the artists.
Cost: EUR 15.00 (catalogue + TRIENNALE-Combined-Ticket EUR 23.00)

Special attention is devoted to art education at the TRIENNALE LINZ 1.0: Special tours in the individual institutions, accompanied tours through all three exhibitions, or special formats for children – a broad palette of different art education and guided tour programs takes your wishes into consideration, provides help getting started as well as in-depth information.

MORE HIGHLIGHTS

The Triumphal Arch of Art
by Ursula Huebner in the middle of the Main Square is the sign of the Triennale Linz 1.0 visible from afar. Linz has successfully completed the transformation from steel city to city of culture, and the triumphal arch is a symbolic commentary on this. It is an arch of honor that with its figures and decor allusions is intended to represent the triumph of artists and an invitation to everyone. High sea containers form the arch, about fifteen figures at the top of the arch cite fictive types of the contemporary art scene.

Blue Hour Above the Rooftops of Linz
An alternating TRIENNALE program is offered daily at Blue Hour starting at 7:00pm on the OK roof: a lounge designed by Michael Kienzer invites you to relax, wooden bridges across an expansive adjacent flat roof offer unusual views of Linz. With a surface area of 1,200 square meters, the top level of a parking garage will be taken over by TRIENNALE artists with site-specific works on the theme of car/cinema. A non-place in public space in the middle of the city because a setting for art. The works, some of which have been specially produced for this, change every ten days. The Movimiento Summer Cinema is shown in 2010 on the roof of the parking garage under the stars. Before every screening, a TRIENNALE film program curated by Christine Dollhofer (Crossing Europe) will be shown. This program provides the TRIENNALE exhibition with an especially dynamic element, showing how artists move outside familiar exhibition spaces. According to director Martin Sturm, it is like a cat sitting quietly and concentrated throughout the day during the hot summer months, and then in the evening, at the blue hour, it energetically whips its tail once.

La Paloma Bar
(Open daily as of 11:00am in good weather)
With the La Paloma Bar a special sculpture project by Hans Kropshofer has anchored in the sculpture park of the Linz Provincial Gallery: a disused sailboat, an art work that becomes a bar and a meeting place. Cools drinks, culinary specialities, and almost like being at sea…

In his artistic work Hans Kropshofer deals with urban architecture and develops temporary provisional uses and lasting platforms for a creative urban public. Urban places are occupied and turned into identity-creating spaces of agency, which he stages himself or makes available to others: for exhibitions, for dancing, for theoretical discourses, for after-hours beer, for sports activities in the middle of the city and under its surface.
