Festival weeks
The wide spectrum of arts, like an exciting juxtaposition of “high culture“ and avant-garde, once again characterises the programme of the Salzkammergut Festival Weeks in Gmunden: from classical music, literature and jazz to film and visual arts.
With a varied and multi-layered programme deluxe, the Salzkammergut Festival Weeks in Gmunden , directed by seasoned veteran Jutta Skokan, also offer concerts in the fields of classical music, modern music, jazz and song recitals, as well as theatre performances, readings, films, exhibitions, discussions and lots more in the summer of culture in 2011. This year the Salzkammergut Festival Weeks will present Austrian and international artists and greats like Ferhan & Ferzan Önder, Christoph Ransmayr, Dennis Russell Davies, Sunnyi Melles, Erwin Steinhauer, Russkaja, Otto Brusatti, Stewart Sukuma, Carl Djerassi and many more.
New at the Salzkammergut Festival Weeks in Gmunden: a musical programme especially for children! Albert Landertinger and Maki Namekwawa will present “Topolina and Maki or How the Mouse Got to the Piano“ with pieces by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Béla Bartók, Edvard Grieg, Robert Schumann, Igor Stravinsky and Philip Glass on 16 July 2011.
The Salzkammergut Festival Weeks 2011 will once again deal intensively with literature. Since 2007, there has been a festival over several days within the scope of the Festival for an excellent Austrian artistic personality: from 28 to 31 July 2011 it will be the much-acclaimed Carinthian author Josef Winkler. Friends and companions, fans and critics, names from theatre and film, journalists and Germanists will present the most varied aspects of his work on four consecutive days. Readings by authors will take place daily. Some of them will be Bernhard Fetz and Hannes Schweiger, Sigrid Löffler, Bernhard Bauer, Antonio Fian and Franz Haas. Harri Stojka’s Gipsy Swing Ensemble, Oliver Welter and Walter Schreiber, among others, will provide the musical accompaniment for the series of events.
Finally, the Philosophical Festival, which will be celebrated this year on 19 August, deserves special mention. Greats from the various disciplines will hold speeches on the topic Divine Virtues and Cardinal Virtues and then talk with attendees. With Anton Zeilinger (hope), Franz Schuh (prudence), Robert Pfaller (temperance), Lutz Ellrich (courage), Konstanze Fliedl (justice), Knut Boeser (belief) and Konrad Paul Liessmann (love).
The most beautiful places in the Lake Traun region offer the incomparable backdrop for the festival events. Among the venues for the Salzkammergut Festival Weeks are Ort Castle, City Theatre Gmunden, the Hipphalle and the Frauscher Wharf, just to name a few.
