Salzkammergut Cycle Path

Salzkammergut cycle path - Ort castle in Gmunden

Dramatic mountain panoramas, unmatched cultural diversity, history spanning four millennia, and the impressive distance end-to-end Salzkammergut Cycle Path, altogether make for a great cycle trip.

Waymarked as "R2", the 345K Salzkammergut Cycle Path is a loop trail traveling through mountainous and lake-strewn Salzkammergut Lake District —you can start your tour as you please at any of the towns along the path.

The lovely town of Gmunden is located at the northern end of Traunsee Lake and is home to the famous Ort Lake Castle. A cruise of the lake aboard historic "Gisela" paddle steamer is strongly recommended! Cycling along the lake, you’ll reach Ebensee. From there, follow the headwaters of Traun River to the Imperial Town of Bad Ischl, the summer holiday seat of Emperor Franz Joseph and the Hapsburg Empire. No other Austrian resort captures the glamour of the long-departed empire quite like this one. Visit the Emperor’s Villa and taste sweet treats at the famous Zauner pastry shop and coffeehouse. The cycling trail then passes along the spa resort of Bad Goisern and Hallstättersee Lake to Hallstatt. The bizarre town of Hallstatt is enveloped by some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world and is located within the UNESCO World and Nature Cultural Heritage Site Hallstatt - Dachstein - Salzkammergut. What’s more, Hallstatt is home to the oldest Salt Mine in the world. Passing along Obertraun and the famous Dachstein Caves you’ll continue cycling along Wolfgangsee Lake to Mondsee Lake and the town of the same name. Attractions worth visiting include the former collegiate church and the Pile Dwelling Museum. Cycling through a portion of Salzburg’s Salzkammergut, the path then takes you back to Upper Austria’s Attersee Lake with the loop bringing you back to your point of departure.

Professional Upper Austrian tour operators offer perfectly organized Cycle Trips along Salzkammergut Cycle Path - complete with detailed itineraries, pre-booked accommodations, and luggage transfer services. Come cycle along crystal clear lakes' shorelines, experience a most breathtaking scenery, cultural sights and attractions, lofty peaks, unique shoreline resorts and enjoy the good life to the full while cycling the Salzkammergut Cycle Path!
