Grenzland Cycle Path
For the explorer in anyone, the 220 kilometers long Grenzland Cycle Path is a great opportunity to experience the natural beauty of this scenic border area at the heart of picturesque Mühlviertel Region, located in Upper Austria’s north. From the Danube Valley, the trail follows the border to Bavaria and the mystic Bohemian Forest.
The Grenzland Cycle Path is directly connected to the Danube Trail, leading along the German and Austrian borders to an area of awesome natural beauty where three countries meet: Bavaria, Bohemia and Mühlviertel region amid the Bohemian Forest. The scenic trail follows the Czech and Austrian borders, continuing to the village of Liebenau. Rolling plains, densely wooded highlands and lush meadows are interspersed with rocks of natural granite. There is little change in elevation, only a few short stages are quite steep.
Trailhead of the tour is the River Danube. You continue pedaling towards Neustift and Oberkappel to the Ranna swimming lake. After a refreshing swim in the lake, you are heading to Kollerschlag and Nebelberg - past Julbach, the Merano of Upper Austria – until you get to Klaffer, where you should not miss out on a visit to the local medicinal herb garden. On fine days, there are uninterrupted panoramic views of the mystic Bohemian Forest, the birthplace of Austria’s world famous poet Adalbert Stifter.
The next stop is Ulrichsberg where you get an insight into the region’s glass production within the Bohemian Forest. The cycle path leads to Aigen-Schlägl, home to the Abbey of the Premonstratensian Canon with its romantic crypt and world famous library, and further to the villages of Berg, Rohrbach and Haslach, Upper Austria’s weaving center. Via St. Stefan, Afiesl, Schönegg and Vorderweißenbach you reach the spa resort of Bad Leonfelden with its healing mud baths and invigorating Kneipp trails. An excursion to Sternstein peak is strongly recommended!
Leaving behind the little town of Schenkenfelden with its truly outstanding fairytale walking path, you get to Reichenthal. The horse railway and the traditional washing and ironing museum can be found in Rainbach and are always worth a visit. Past Leopoldschlag you continue cycling towards the museum resort of Windhaag, and the village of Sandl, the hub of rural verre églomisé pictures. In lovely Liebenau you are invited to discover the romantic Tanner Moor marshlands as a final highlight.
