GO YOUR OWN WAY!

There are many different facets to hiking in the Inner Salzkammergut area. Possibilities range from easy walks through lush meadows, to Nordic Walking through forests and climbing on fixed rope routes of the highest degree of difficulty.
You can also wander along charming brooks through untouched gorges. There is something for everyone. Not only in the summer, but also in the spring and fall time. You’ve got the choice.
For example in Gosau: 250 kilometers of hiking trails ranging from easy to difficult await you. The trail from the far end of the Gosausee Lake to the front of the lake is especially popular; so is the gondola ride up to Zwieselalm pasture.
In Bad Goisern you can undertake easy and demanding Alpine day hikes. The route around Predigstuhl Mountain is just one of many options. Stroll through the village of Hallstatt or start hiking along the 42 kilometers long Soleweg theme trail, which covers the world’s oldest sole pipeline and leads to Ebensee. Moreover there are many beautiful small hikes to be made. Hallstatt is also an ideal base for exploring the picturesque Dachstein area. In Obertraun too, you are spoilt for choice and you are recommended to explore the wonderful Dachstein mountain range. Hike or take the gondola. Whatever your choice, it’s going to be YOUR way.

MILES AND MILES ACROSS THE MOUNTAINS

Mountain biking, the trend sport of the last years, is still getting more and more popular. Not surprising, considering the options that await bikers in the Inner Salzkammergut area. In the summer and fall there are some 400 kilometers of perfectly signposted cycle trails at all levels of difficulty. There are hotels and other tourist offers that are specialized on bikers, so you find perfect conditions for exploring unspoilt nature on your bicycle. The 173 kilometers long Dachstein Loop Trail for example, leads from Bad Goisern through three provinces of Austria – Upper Austria, Salzburg and Styria. Shorter and more relaxed is the Weißenbach Trail (20 kilometers). Obertraun and Gosau too, are ideal starting points for conquering breathtaking passes and getting to romantic Alpine pastures. And all those who fancy “hell on earth” can take part in the ultimate bikers’ event: the Salzkammergut Mountain Bike Trophy which covers 220 kilometers and 7,000 meters of vertical rise! Whatever distance you want to go, don’t forget to drink regularly. You must not feel thirsty. Take a sip from your bottle every 15 minutes, then biking is even more fun.

AHEAD INTO THE PAST!

How often have you dreamed of stepping into a time machine and traveling into the past?
A visit of Hallstatt is like a journey into the past. The village is located on the shore of Hallstätter See Lake and nestles into the surrounding mountains. It has an aura of thousand-year old culture. Hallstatt is a UNESCO World Heritage Town not only because of its bizarre architecture. Flora and fauna of the region are exceptional and rare. Numerous archeological findings and a 7000-year old culture make this place incomparable. Because of its long tradition and the natural wealth of the region, the Hallstatt-Dachstein-Salzkammergut region was declared UNESCO World Heritage Region in December 1997. The village of Hallstatt is the center of this breathtaking landscape. The area itself is large and varied. It ranges from the Hohe Dachstein mountain range in the south, to the Gosaukamm mountain ridge and the Gosau Lakes in the west, to the outstanding Gosauzwang lakeshore in the north. This area truly represents the heritage of a whole region. The spectacular Salt Mine, the Dachstein Ice Cave, mysterious graves and exceptional spectacles of nature ensure that you’ll experience a surprise on every day.
