In the Gothic Town of Freistadt

The romantic town of Freistadt lies embedded in a broad valley basin of Mühlviertel’s gently rolling hills. Watched over by the mighty donjon and protected by two town gates the well-preserved fortifications, the idyllic pathways and courtyards are ideal for an excursion into former centuries.
Thanks to its architectural gems like the gothic houses and fortifications, the beautiful Renaissance courtyards, the colorful Baroque facades which accommodate first-class hotels and guesthouses and tasteful shops, the town of Freistadt has a southern flair. Numerous towers have been watching over this romantic ensemble for more than 600 years.
Experience the medieval town of Freistadt on a guided tour. Freistadt "Old Town Guides" show you the most beautiful spots of this town and will give you an unforgettable impression of this “town of towers”. While strolling through Freistadt you should stop at the castle museum which holds some 18,000 exhibits. They give a good overview of the culture and history of Freistadt and the Mühlviertel district.
Beer brewing has had a 700-year long tradition in Freistadt. Two 80m-deep fountains provide for perfect water for beer brewing. This water is the base of excellent beer. The 225-year old malt floor is used as malt depot still today. The catacombs underneath the brewery are used as storeroom. Guided tours are offered for groups of 8+ persons. Take some of your friends or relatives with you on your excursion to Freistadt!
A visit of the famous Lubinger Confectionary and Cake Shop at the town square next to the castle is also worthwhile. The flair of the medieval vaults and the historic building of the café are especially attractive.
