Steyr, the Christmas Town
During Advent Season, the Romantic Town of Steyr offers guests the unique opportunity to experience the official place of residence of the Christ child adorned in holiday finery.
A special delight of Steyr’s Christmas-related activities is the so called "Kripperlroas", a journey taking you from one precious crèche to the other. However, undisputed highlight of all season’s attractions is the famous Steyr Crèche, depicting medieval scenes of peasant life. On November 20, 2009, the Austrian Christmas Museum reopens its doors with its lavish collections of antique Christmas decorations, among them true rarities and gems.
On November 21, 2009 opens the Christmas Market in Steyr, the official place of residence of the Christ child. On Fridays, Saturdays and Holidays, lovingly decorated stalls are positioned along the Promenade Avenue, selling lovely Christmas decorations, precious crèches, elaborate handicrafts, skilful carvings and delicious culinary delights. Soak up the enjoyable atmosphere while listening to wind ensembles playing traditional music.
In the Romantic Town of Steyr, Christmas nostalgia is cherished a lot and adults’ Christmas dreams come true here as well: The historic downtown square serves as stunning backdrop for an atmospheric Christmas Market with traditional wind playing and numerous stalls selling elaborate handicrafts and culinary delights. This fine market opens on November 28, 2009 by 7:30pm. Devilish creatures, called "Perchten" will roam the market this day. These multipurpose figures from Germanic mythology are said to drive away bad spirits and to reawaken the dormant pre-winter earth by stamping life and light back into it!
In Steyr’s district of Christkindl – named for the Christ child – a purpose-built temporary Post Office opens its door every year by late November. From November 20, 2009 to January 06, 2010, you can have your Christmas greetings sent to your family and friends all over the world decorated with the Austrian special Christmas postage stamp.
