As soon as winter arrives the lovely Traunsee Lake Region turns into an outstanding oasis of peace and quiet. Enjoy the most beautiful days of the year off the beaten tracks, far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Culture buffs will love the colorful Advent markets and traditional festivals and celebrations, for example the atmospheric "Apple, Nut and Almond" Market at Rathausplatz and in Gmunden's old town. Between December 26 and February 02 you can admire the region's most beautiful Christmas crèches and Nativity scenes. Most of the precious, hand-carved exhibits are on display either in museums and churches or in private houses. The picturesque little towns of Ebensee and Altmünster are especially famous for its guided "Kripperlroas" tour. Staying in one of the four Traunsee resorts for the holiday season, you can experience centuries-old folk traditions that are unique to this region. Probably the most beautiful custom of all are the "Glöcklerlauf" Processions, deeply steeped in history and tradition. Every year on January 05, the eve of Epiphany, groups of white-dressed men meet at nightfall, wearing heavy lanterns on their heads to tour the streets of town. The aim of this unique parade is to shed light during the dark winter months and to reawake nature from its winter sleep.

Discover truly great skiing and snowboarding at modern resorts, explore a whole new world of white on snowshoe hikes or enjoy a romantic horse-drawn sleigh ride through the glittering countryside. Ebensee's Feuerkogel ski area lends itself to great skiing for the whole family at the elevation of 1600 meters above sea level. The nearby Hochlecken slope and Grünberg area offer a few ski lifts at reasonable rates. Car-free toboggan runs, cozy mountain inns, immaculate cross-country skiing tracks and plenty of other winter activities ensure memorable days in the heart of nature.
