History, customs, traditions, heritage and culture will be your companions as you discover the charms of the country.

Hallstatt
Hallstatt is a UNESCO World and Nature Cultural Heritage Site. The Hallstatt salt mine is the oldest managed mining concern worldwide, which is still running today. And Hallstatt’s rich archaeological findings from the early Iron Age gave a whole cultural epoch its name - the Hallstatt Period.

Step Back Into Celtic Times in Mitterkirchen
Mitterkirchen in Danube Valley opens a window on everyday life some 2,700 years ago and inspires visitors with an appreciation of Celtic history and tradition.

Small Historic Towns
A flourishing town named Ovilava in Roman times, Wels lies on the left bank of the Traun River and still is an important town. In Enns you can visit spiritual cultural centers that date back to the Middle Ages.

There is hardly any European region as rich in abbeys and monasteries as Upper Austria. The impressing architecture of these historic buildings has not lost any of their attraction. In catholic Austria the orders’ culture has survived to present days as the monasteries have kept up with the pace. Some have even opened their gates to tourists wanting to visit the old libraries, listen to authentic sacred music, see fine handicrafts or enjoy culinary delights.

The towns of Braunau, Obernberg and Schärding owe their prosperity and much of their historic, Baroque architecture to the once thriving trade and commerce on the Inn River. Upper Austria’s capital Linz was at the center of important trading routes.

The rich history of Salzkammergut Lake District’s salt trade can be traced wherever you go—especially in the lovely lakefront town of Gmunden. And in romantic Steyr you can stroll through picturesque alleys and lanes and past the historic industrial sights of this “Old Iron Town”.
