Cycling the Grenzland Trail
For the explorer in anyone, the Grenzland Cycle Path is a great opportunity to experience the natural beauty of this scenic border area at the heart of picturesque Muehlviertel Region, located in Upper Austria’s north.
The 194 kilometers long Grenzland Cycle Path travels from Kramesau in Bohemian Forest to Arbesbach in Lower Austria. Rolling plains, densely wooded highlands and lush meadows are interspersed with rocks of natural granite. There is little change in elevation, only a few short stages are quite steep, making this arguably one of the most beautiful cycle paths in Upper Austria.
Trailhead of the tour is Neustift, from where there are uninterrupted panoramic views of the Danube valley. The cycle path leads to Aigen-Schlaegl, home to the Abbey of the Premonstratensian Canon with its famous beer brewery. The path continues to Bad Leonfelden, where mystical wooded moor lands are waiting to be discovered. You continue pedaling towards Muehlviertel Region to Windhaag bei Freistadt. This is where you will find the Muehlviertel Woodhouse, a perfect place to learn all about natural forest habitats. Next you get to the village of Sandl, the hub of rural verre églomisé pictures with a worthwhile museum. The scenic trail follows to the border, continuing to the last Upper Austrian village of Liebenau. This small place is surrounded by an area of awesome natural beauty and the views are second to none. There it is time to say goodbye to Upper Austria and hello Lower Austria. The last village on the Grenzland Trail is Arbesbach in Lower Austria, home to an imposing castle in ruins.
